Inexpensive Days Out Ideas For Families

So, we're pretty much halfway through the summer holidays! I've been trying to find inexpensive ways to entertain the kids and so thought i'd share some.

Yesterday we went to West Mersea, well worth a visit, don't forget your bucket and net as the crabbing is great there but we didn't see anywhere to buy the supplies. Parking was interesting and very busy though but we were lucky enough to find a space at the side of the road which saved us the parking fee. Good start! We only had our 6 year old with us and he was happy to walk up and down and look at the boats for a while. We stopped for waffle with ice cream, sprinkles and golden syrup (£3.50, him not us) from a food van with seating. It was lovely, quite busy but we were able to sit and take our time and take in the view. On the way back to the car we saw a sign about a lifeboat. We wandered in to the lifeboat building and were given a very comprehensive tour. Our son was more than happy to see the boat and the tractor which goes underwater. He loved hearing all of the information and got to try on one of the helmets and see where they all change. This was all free, we donated though but still not expensive. He was thrilled with his photos and his leaflet and marched off back to the car full of information to use for 'show and tell' when school starts again. We were only there a couple of hours but could easily have extended it by crabbing (will be prepared next time) or eating (picnic possible but there were cafes and pubs along the front). Would recommend.

Wild Wednesday at Danbury was also free, and also a bit hit! We've been twice. It costs £4 for over three hours of parking (go early as the car parks fill up fast). It is 11-2 on Wednesdays during the holidays. Definitely take a picnic, and definitely wear old clothes. They have den building, water play, mud pie making and trails going on the whole time. They also have times for other activities such as flag making. I took two of mine, they are 12 and 6. They LOVED it. Being able to run around in the large field and play with loads of other kids was great. They are encouraged to tree climb and roll down hills and are given booklets with lots of activities to tick off. All of the activities that are offered there are free.
